Who is SME Health Insurance for?

Its design is to protect the Health needs of Directors and Senior Management within a business, as well as all employees.  The minimum requirement for a Group scheme is just two employees.

What does Group Health Insurance cover?

Health Insurance policies are adaptable to meet both your business and financial needs; however in principle they include the following:

  • Specialist Consultations
  • Diagnostic scans & tests
  • Surgical procedures in a private hospital
  • Alternative Therapies
  • The latest cancer drugs
  • Mental Health cover
  • Access to a broad range of private hospitals
  • Many insurers now give access to private GP and prescriptions services
  • Conditions such joint problems (musculoskeletal), Cancer and Mental Health are often fast tracked without the need to see your GP.

What’s not covered?

This is not an exhaustive list; however in the main a Health Insurance policy will not cover the following:

  • Pre-existing known medical conditions
  • GP fees
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Out-patient drugs and dressings
  • Unproven treatment
  • Pregnancy and childbirth (except complications)
  • General dental treatment
  • Treatment abroad

What happens when you join?

When you join a Health Insurance policy for the first time you will typically be offered one of two underwriting options, however in the main Health Insurance does not cover any known or on-going medical conditions. The options are Full Medical Underwriting or Moratorium underwriting.

Full Medical Underwriting

This is a method of underwriting where the insurer requires full details of all previous medical history and current state of health for each person to be covered by the policy. This usually involves the completion of a health questionnaire as part of the application for cover.

From this, the insurer’s underwriter can then decide whether to:

  • allow cover on standard terms with no personal exclusions applied;
  • exclude cover for a specified medical condition and any associated medical conditions;
  • exclude cover as above, but with the proviso that the insurer will review the decision at a stated time in the future.

Moratorium

Cover will typically not be provided for any medical conditions which any person was aware of in the five years prior to joining the policy. However if after two years continued membership there has been no re-occurrence of the medical condition and no medical advice or medication had been sought or arranged, then after two years the condition may be eligible for treatment.

With moratorium underwriting, you should be aware that claims will be assessed in accordance with the insurer’s standard policy terms and conditions at the point of claim, which will be based upon your GP records.
