AVIVA Healthcare - COVID-19 pledge

Aviva have today followed the same stance of many other insurers by stating that it will independently audit the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, making appropriate refunds if they were found to have profited as a result of a reduction in claims spend. This initially applies to Consumers and SME healthcare clients; however its aim is to look at Large Corporate and Trusts in a similar way; however these are complex cases and need further consideration.

Steve Bridger - Managing Director of Aviva UK Health today commented:

We remain committed to supporting our UK Private Medical Insurance (PMI) customers and to offer products that meet their needs. While the terms and conditions of our policies have not changed, the COVID-19 pandemic has restricted the availability of private treatment. However, your clients' cover will still apply if treatment is available privately. We don’t yet know what the overall impact will be on claims experience and that's why we’ve developed our COVID-19 Pledge for UK PMI Customers

Getting back to business

From 28th April the NHS confirmed that the restoration of some services would start to take place across the UK on a localised basis. This means that private hospitals can start to support non-urgent procedures, which had previously been deferred - this is a positive step.

In the first instance, we anticipate that private resources will be aligned to providing critical care such as cancer treatments to both private and NHS patients. This means that your clients may experience longer waiting times for some non-urgent treatment during this time. Accessibility to private treatment may also vary across the country, due to the regional variation in the number of COVID-19 cases.

Recent weeks have been very difficult for everyone, but it is reassuring to see the public and private sectors working together in the national interest, and healthcare professionals rising to the challenge. As the UK moves into the next phase of its COVID-19 healthcare strategy you can be reassured that we’re working hard to continue to offer your clients the support they need, as soon and as safely as possible.
